(Big thank you to our friend Sara at What Happens On The Backstreet for sharing her love for Ava Dean Beauty!)
Looking to spice up your DIY manicures but don’t think you have the tools to do so? You’d be surprised what you can do just by using items around your house!! The best part about these “hacks” is that none of them will break the bank and all of them work beautifully with your favorite Ava Dean Beauty nail polish colors.
Grab these items and let yourself be inspired to do something you’ve never done before!
1. Cosmetic Sponge Wedges
Makeup sponges – they’re not just for blending your contour and concealer anymore! If you can’t decide on just one nail polish color, then sponge techniques are the answer. For a gradient look (blended lines of colors across your nails), you’ll want to paint a strip of each color you want on the flat end of the sponge. Once you’ve added all of the colors, just dab onto the base of your nail, either over a clear base or a painted base. Keep applying more color to the sponge (in the same order) and dabbing onto the nail until you achieve your desired opaqueness.
You can also break off small pieces of the sponge, add polish the “rough” edge and dab the color onto the nail for a galaxy or tie-dye effect.
Once you’re done with the sponge, don’t throw it away! Simply cut off the used edge and voila – your sponge is ready for use again on your next at-home mani.
2. Cotton Swab
While we recommend using a liquid latex around the edge of a nail if you’re doing the gradient sponge technique so that you can easily peel off excess paint, using a q-tip around the edge of your nail for clean up is the next best option! Simply dipping a cotton swab into nail polish remover, instead of a cotton ball, will clean up ANY mistake you might make while painting your nails without ruining your entire manicure.
All of the Ava Dean Beauty polishes are perfect base coats for a glitter infused mani, captivating for anytime of the year. Have loose glitter laying around from arts and crafts or projects you haven’t gotten around to yet? Sprinkling a bit of glitter onto still wet polish is the addition you didn’t know you needed. Make sure you do this with your hand / nail on top of something you can shake the excess glitter onto and back into the container.
Just want a little sparkle? Add a bit of Crystal Clear across the tip of your nails and dip your nail into the glitter of your choice. Once they’re dry, dust off the excess for a totally work-appropriate manicure that everyone will notice.
4. Bobby Pins
Using a bobby pin might be the easiest nail art hack yet! Are you a fan of polka dots or differently patterned nails? Dipping the round end of a bobby pin into your favorite polish and using it to “dot” your nail is a quick and simple way to bring out the inner nail artist you didn’t know you were.
5. A Loofah Sponge
Lyric Dean and Ava Jaymes are polishes that are reminiscent of all things light and magical, making them just the polishes you need for this technique! Loofah sponges are perfect to use for nail art that resembles the scales of a mermaid. After you’ve painted the base of your nail, grab a loofah sponge that you’re no longer using, cut a piece of it, pull the netting tight around your finger, and paint (or sponge) a different color over top. This will create a scale-like design sure to impress!
Make sure that you’re sealing all of your hard work in with Crystal Clear Top Coat for a manicure that will last well over a week!
